About Us
The Boone County Historical Society oversees the Maplewood House, a Victorian era brick home that is open for tours by appointment. The Walters-Boone County History Museum houses exhibits and a history and geneaology library. The attached Montminy Gallery serves as a venue for more than a dozen exhibits of local artists and craftsmen as well as hosting musical events such as the Old Time Fiddlers Jams. A history village is taking shape on the grounds of the museum with a pioneer cabin and a 1900s country store. Tours of the cabin, store and Maplewood House will be available beginning in May. The museum giftshop carries local arts and crafts and a wide range of books relating to our area's history and culture.
Our mission is to collect, study, and preserve artifacts; to recognize historic sites; and to interpret and disseminate information pertaining to the history of Boone County, for the education and enjoyment of the county's residents and the general public.
We regularly mount exhibits in the Walters-Boone County Historical Museum, Montminy Gallery, and Maplewood hous. We initiate and support appropriate celebrations and meetings honoring the memory of the pioneers and citizens of Boone County to engender pride in the rich history of Boone County and in the state of Missouri and foster an appreciation for the cultural diversity of Boone County.
The goals of the Society also embrace cultural conservation in order to encourage the dynamic continuation of local arts, crafts, and traditions.
